We are planting a diverse range of tree species to ensure a robust and sustainable reforestation effort. Here are the specific types and quantities of trees we will be planting:
- Birch: 50,000
- Larch: 50,000
- Pine: 27,000
- Spruce: 6,000
- Poplar: 10,000
In total, we are planting 143,000 trees. This variety of species helps promote biodiversity and ecosystem resilience in our reforestation project.
Planting trees in Iceland provides significant benefits both locally and globally. Locally, it helps combat severe soil erosion caused by volcanic activity and historical deforestation, stabilizes the soil, and protects the land from further degradation. It also restores unique Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity by providing habitats for local wildlife. Globally, reforestation in Iceland contributes to climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere. This effort supports the global water cycle by regulating rainfall patterns and maintaining water quality. Moreover, the restoration of these ecosystems helps maintain ecological balance and resilience, benefiting the planet’s overall environmental health.
The purpose of the 12,000,000 m² of land we purchased is to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of our reforestation efforts. By owning the land, we can maintain complete control over its management, in coöperation with the Icelandic Forest Service, allowing us to strategically plan, plant, and nurture a diverse range of tree species. This ownership guarantees that the trees will be protected and allowed to grow for decades, providing continuous environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration, soil stabilization, and biodiversity enhancement.
Our reforestation project is unique because we own 12,000,000 m² of land in Iceland, ensuring complete control and long-term commitment to sustainable land management. Unlike many other reforestation companies that plant trees on leased or borrowed land, our ownership guarantees that the trees will be protected and allowed to grow for decades. This allows us to strategically plant and maintain a diverse range of tree species, leveraging the unique carbon sequestration capacity of Iceland’s volcanic soils to effectively mitigate climate change. Additionally, by restoring Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, we enhance global biodiversity and contribute significantly to the global fight against climate change. Our efforts also support the global water cycle by regulating rainfall patterns and maintaining water quality, making our project distinctly impactful.
The reforestation project is located in the central northern part of Iceland, near to the second capital of Iceland, namely Akureyri.
