Climate change doubled the risk of flooding in Central Europe due to extreme rainfall such as this month. This is the conclusion of an international collaboration of scientists, World Weather Attribution, in a first rapid analysis of the natural disaster of more than a week ago.

The four-day rainfall was the heaviest ever measured in the area. At least 24 people died in the floods. Thousands of people had to leave their homes. The exact extent of the damage is not yet clear, but the costs run into billions.
